New Småland – strategies of interregional Arts cooperation

The Brodbeck Foundation is pleased to introduce a presentation by Jonatan Habib Engqvist and Mike Bode, both artistic directors of New Småland, an interregional cooperation project between local government, arts institutions and a university conceived on the occasion of the Swedish bid to host Manifesta 2018.
Bode and Engqvist will illustrate the conditions and developments of the New Småland project which aims to combine the visual arts, design and critical thinking, developed at international level with the local culture and experiences in order to address and re-evaluate the contemporary aesthetic, social and political landscape of Småland, a region of lakes, forests and rare earths between Malmö and Stockholm.

• Jonatan Habib Engqvist is an independent curator and theorist with a background in Philosophy and Aesthetic theory. He teaches regularly at The Royal Institute of Fine Art in Stockholm. In the Swedish capital he also runs the small-scale curatorial residency CRIS. Between 2009-2014 he was project manager for visual art at Iaspis (the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International exchange and residency programme) where he organised numerous public programmes, publications, curatorial visits and facilitated over 200 artists in residence in Sweden and abroad.
• Mike Bode is a visual artist, organizer and researcher based in Sweden. Bode’s practice has often taken its starting point in investigations of the built environment seen in relation to societal, historical and political shifts and the effects of new technologies. These works, which are often developed collaboratively, utilize video and photography as well as architectural and spatial interventions, digital media, archival material and texts. More recently Bode has been researching the use of online media and is presently part of the research team for the project SCREENING PROTEST (tele)visual narratives of dissent across time, space and genre at the Department of Media Studies at Stockholm University.
